Weekend starting 8th March
Saturday
Blackburn v Fulham
Odds: Blackburn 8/15 Fulham 5/1 Draw 13/5
Fulham need to start picking up points in a hurry, they now languish six points behind Reading and are in danger of being cast adrift. Unfortunately Blackburn will be equally motivated by the prospect of European football next season and go into this one on the back of a decent run. At their best, which they should be, Blackburn are just too strong for Fulham who, lest we forget, are still awaiting a first away win of the season. The wait will have to continue I’m afraid.
Prediction: 3-1
Liverpool v Newcastle
Odds: Liverpool 4/11 Newcastle 15/2 Draw 3/1
Oh dear, another tough looking fixture for Keegan, unless his team can rouse themselves from their woefully insipid recent form its hard to see anything other than a home win particularly given Liverpool’s recent performances. Newcastle are now 4/1 to get relegated with some bookies and this really doesn’t look like the fixture to start turning things round. Torres to grab another couple as the Magpies collapse, sorry Kevin.
Prediction: 4-1
Reading v Man City
Odds: Reading 7/5 Man City 7/4 Draw 11/5
A tough one to call, Reading grabbed a valuable late winner at Middlesbrough last week and that could kick-start a change in fortunes, prior to that they’d lost 8 on the trot – relegation form. Man City have been slightly erratic of late and need to start winning games like this to keep their European aspirations on course. I’m going to say a draw.
Prediction: 1-1
Sunday
Sunderland v Everton
Odds: Sunderland 2/1 Everton 6/5 Draw 9/4
Sunderland have been far stronger at home this season so they shouldn’t be underestimated, albeit against an Everton team who’ve been impressively consistent and are clearly determined to push their Merseyside neighbors all the way in the race for that coveted last Champions League place. I reckon Everton might just scrape it in what promises to be a tightly fought and physical game.
Prediction: 1-2
Tottenham v West Ham
Odds: Tottenham 8/11 West Ham 23/10 Draw 7/2
There’s generally a bit of needle in this London derby and even though neither of these teams appear to have a great deal to play for its bound to be hotly contested, especially given that they’re both coming off the back of embarrassing results. At least Spurs have the excuse of a cup hang-over for their spanking at Birmingham last week. A lot depends on how fresh Spurs are after what looks like a tough UEFA Cup match against PSV on Thursday. Still, with the home advantage I think they’ll nick it.
Prediction: 3-1
Wigan v Arsenal
Odds: Wigan 4/1 Arsenal 8/13 Draw 5/2
A tough one for Arsenal; with Man Utd breathing down their neck they know they can’t afford to slip up and they’ll be anxious not to bottle it. Wigan will try to frustrate Arsenal who haven’t really done themselves any favours with their “why won’t anyone let us play our beautiful football” moans and have managed a string of clean sheets at home. If they can continue to keep it tight I can see Arsenal struggling to get anything more than a point out of this one.
Prediction: 1-1
